God’s Plan for Us

I have always wanted answers to these questions: Does God really have a plan for us? What is my purpose in life? Where will I go after I die? The missionaries taught me about the Plan of Salvation — God’s plan for the happiness of His children. It is centered on the Atonement of Jesus Christ and explains the eternal purpose of life.

They taught me about the pre-mortal world, where we lived with our Father in Heaven before coming to Earth. We are His spirit children — literally family. The plan is for us to come to Earth and gain a body, and to exercise agency, the ability to choose. With our agency we can keep God’s commandments, have faith in His Son Jesus Christ, receive His blessings, and make sacred covenants — promises — with God.

They explained what happens after death: the spirit world, where there is both paradise and spirit prison; and then the degrees of glory — the telestial, terrestrial, and celestial kingdoms. In order to return to our Father in Heaven, we need a Savior. Jesus Christ suffered for our sins and was crucified, offering each of us the gift of repentance and forgiveness. His Resurrection made it possible for us to overcome physical death as well.
