From Judaism to Jesus Christ — Part Five
How to Pray
by Nancy Goldberg Hilton
The businessman in Houston sent missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to meet with me. I briefly described my miracle to them. They told me they had six one-hour lessons to teach me; the fourth lesson was the Plan of Salvation — God’s plan for all of us, including what happens after I die. I had yearned for this information for as long as I could remember, and now these young missionaries said they had the answers.
They began our meetings with prayer. Their prayers were heartfelt and communicated directly with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. I was astonished — as a Jewish woman I had memorized prayers, but I had never heard or said a prayer like that before. I asked them to say another prayer; it was different each time, not memorized. I asked them to teach me how to pray.
This is what they taught me: first, address your Heavenly Father. Then thank Him for your blessings and list them. Next, ask your questions or discuss your needs and concerns. Finally, close your prayer in the name of Jesus Christ — amen.
The idea that I could actually communicate with God and possibly hear from Him was life-changing. That night I knelt and tried to pray for the first time in my life as if I were talking to God. I thanked Him for the missionaries and for my miracle at Rainbow Bridge. I asked many questions and then ended my prayer in the name of Jesus Christ — amen.
It felt strange and yet perfect. Now I could talk with God anytime, anywhere. This, too, was another miracle in my life.
